For this experiment, we need 6 things.

  1. A balloon
  2. An empty bottle
  3. Vinegar

  6. A teaspoon

Let’s Go!

Conducting the Experiment:

  1. Take the plastic bottle and pour ½ a cup of vinegar into it.
  2. Now Grab the balloon and secure it at the end of the funnel just like this. If you don’t have a funnel, you can also use a paper funnel.
  3. Use the funnel to fill the balloon with some baking soda. We will put three teaspoons of the baking soda into the funnel. Remember to Shake it Up!
  4. Secure the balloon on top of the bottle.
  5. Now lift the balloon and watch it BLOW UP!

Scientific Principle and Application

Question: So friends, Can you guess What caused the balloon to blow up?

It could have been a gas that erupted inside the bottle. But, wait a minute we didn’t add any gas, where did the gas come from ?

Because we added two very different substances…’Baking Soda and Vinegar’ and boom.. What happened is called a chemical change A chemical change happens when two or more different substances come together to form a new substance that did not exist before.

And chemical changes they’re all around us. The one thing we can’t live without… WATER is the result of a chemical change between two gases ‘Hydrogen and Oxygen’ In fact from the baking of cake to the making of yogurt, your kitchen is full of chemical changes. So friends, now that you know what chemical changes are let's see how many examples you can gather.

And do write to us in the comment section below.

So let the fun begin! TOODLES!
